About GI:

A geographical indication (GI) is a sign used on products that have a specific geographical origin and possess qualities or a reputation that are due to that origin. In order to function as a GI, a sign must identify a product as originating in a given place. Typically, such a name conveys an assurance of quality and distinctiveness which is essentially attributable to the fact of its origin in that defined geographical locality, region or country. India, as a member of the World Trade Organization (WTO), enacted the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration & Protection) Act, 1999 has come into force with effect from 15th September 2003. GIs contribute to the socio-economic development of the area to which they belong. They also play an important role in protecting the heritage and culture of the region concerned.

Govt. of India:

The Government of India (DPIIT, GI registry and CIPAM-Ministry of Commerce and Industry) has undertaken several steps for promotion of Indian products registered as GIs like participation in trade fairs and other events to promote and create awareness on GIs.
Total Number of Registered GI Products in Bharat (India): More than 360.

Why GI:

-GI confers legal protection to goods in domestic as well as international markets.

-Provides unauthorized use of registered by registered GI by others.

-Provide financial benefit to producers of original GI goods produced in a geographical territory.
